Calcium, Vitamin D3 Supplementation Reduces Hyperparathyroidism And Hip Fracture
A DGReview of :"Combined Calcium and Vitamin D 3 Supplementation in Elderly Women: Confirmation of Reversal of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism and Hip Fracture Risk: The Decalyos II Study"
By James Adams
Supplementation with a combination of calcium and vitamin D3 reverses hyperparathyroidism and the risk of hip fracture in elderly women.
These results, from the Decalyos II study, confirm earlier results from Decalyos I, according to investigators from H?pital Edouard Herriot, Merck KgaA, Synarc and Integrated Clinical Data in Lyon, France.
Decalyos II is a two-year, multicentre, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled confirmatory study. Five hundred eighty three ambulatory institutionalized women aged a mean 85.2 years were randomized to received one of three possible treatments: 199 women received calcium-vitamin D3 in fixed combination, 190 women received calcium and vitamin D3 separately and 194 women received placebo.
The fixed and separate combination groups each received the same daily total of 1,200 milligrams calcium plus 800 IU vitamin D3.
Results showed that both supplement combinations increased serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and decreased serum intact parathyroid hormone by similar amounts with levels reaching normalcy after six months of supplementation.
Femoral neck bone mineral density was measured in a subgroup of 114 patients and found to decrease in the placebo group while remaining unchanged in the supplementation groups.
No differences were observed between the supplementation and placebo groups in distal radius bone mineral density and quantitative ultrasonic parameters at the os calcis.
The placebo group showed a relative risk of hip fracture of 1.69 in comparison with the supplementation group.
Secondary hyperparathyroidism, hip bone loss and risk of hip fracture are all reduced by combined calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation, the investigators conclude. These results confirm those of the earlier Decalyos I study.
